Reach out, make a difference. The lives we lead are crazy busy; I don’t need to list all of the things we try to cram into our schedule each and every day. I mean, even when we’re sitting in our car for 30 seconds at a red  light we need to look down at our phone to see if the text we sent a mile and a half ago was  answered. Let there be a minute of sitting still, and we’re sure that there’s something we’re  forgetting to do. Down time can make us feel like we’re going a little crazy sometimes, right? What if all you HAD was downtime? I’m not talking about vacation, relaxing, I-finally-have-time-to-paint-my-nails downtime. What if  the downtime—time with nothing to do—was spent in a cold cell made of steel, metal, and  concrete? No friends, no family, nothing constructive to do. Surely, there would be stages of  emotions ranging from panic, fear, anger and anxiety to boredom, oppression, fatigue and  depression.  The first day. We really can’t comprehend the emotions inmates go through day after day, year in and year  out. Factor in the lifestyle of surviving prison and I honestly don’t know how some of the  inmates I talk to are as strong as they are. Their faith is strong, they’re perspective is positive,  they are thankful for another day! THANKFUL! In an environment of violence, hustling, noise  levels that wear your patience thin, awful food (and not much of it) and not being able to get  much more than a Tylenol for an upper respiratory infection that drags on for weeks, what is an  inmate thankful for? I’ll tell you: hope. Hope from people like you and me, letting them know  that they matter, their lives are important, and God has a plan and a purpose for them. No one  in their daily lives—to include the correctional officers and counselors—tell them that they can  get better, they can turn their lives around. Shouldn’t these ‘Correctional Institutions’ be  helping these men and women with rehabilitation and changing their outlooks? Most everything  that goes on behind those walls are the exact opposite of building these people up to live  better.  Write an inmate. Get to know him, let him know that there is a reason to fight this good fight  of faith. A little consistent encouragement can make all the difference in one person’s life! We  are made for fellowship, we need each other. 1 Peter 4:8 says to love one another with an  unfailing love, for love covers a multitude of sin. Proverbs 15:1 tells us that a soft answer turns  away wrath, while a harsh word stirs up anger. Inmates have enough wrath and anger around and  in them. Be a soft word, a safe place for them. Help someone to see there is still good in this  broken, wicked world. Hope is the strongest thing an inmate can have, and you can give it.  Someone needs you, please reach out. It only takes a single word to create a smile, write an inmate and bring some light into their dark and gloomy world. Inspire hope, make a differance!
